SAIL's IISCO steel plant takes first steps to make green steel (Issue of the week, November Week #5 (2014))
The casting of the first lot of 100 tonnes of billets as part of the trial runs at the soon-to-be-commissioned IISCO steel plant in Burnpur last week, marked the first instance of a unit under Steel Authority of India using Electro-Static Precipitator
(ESP) facility to make environment friendly steel.

This follows the successful hot trial of second Convertor with ESP facility at BOF Shop by the SAIL chairman C S Verma on November 20.

The latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report reiterates that natural resources depletion and changing climate patterns can put a question mark on the survival of the human race, if natural resources are consumed at the current rate. Therefore,
maintaining and preserving natural capital is essential for humanity’s survival.

Panel approves change in waste processing technology (November Week #5 (2014)) Mumbai: The city’s 9,400 tonne of municipal solid waste, generated per day, can soon be diverted to the Kanjurmarg dumping site as the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) has approved change in technology for processing waste at the Kanjurmarg
plant, a proposal that was stuck for the past five years. Despite receiving land for dumping at Kanjurmarg in 2003, the project had not been able to take off because of litigation over environmental concerns.

Global Warming (November Week #5 (2014))
The Government has conducted a scientific study on climate change caused by global warming and its impact on monsoon.

Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), Govt of India had undertaken the Indian second National Communication to UNFCCC during 2009-2011(NATCOM-II). The communication had been a national effort which involved many multi-disciplinary scientific groups.
Ministry of Earth Sciences carried out scientific studies on projected climate change and variability under Global and Regional Climate Change (GRCC) government programme under which programme a dedicated Centre for Climate Change Research (CCCR) within the
Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, was established.

Clinical waste disposal a big concern as hosps mushroom (November Week #5 (2014)) Thane: With increasing number of health care centres in the city, the amount of Bio-Medical Waste generated by them has also seen an increase. Figures availed from the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) reflect that there has been a 221 per cent rise in
the number of firms who have registered to get their BMW disposed off in the last six years.

Golden Temple to be under pollution scanner 24x7 (November Week #5 (2014))
AMRITSAR: Worried over reports about India's most loved monument Taj Mahal turning yellow due to pollution, the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has woken up to the imminent threat to Golden Temple, Sikhs' holiest shrine. In an effort to keep the
Golden Temple's sheen intact, the PPCB is all set to install Punjab's first continuous monitoring station (CMS) at the temple considering the high levels of pollution caused by vehicular traffic, gold refinery industrial units and hotels in the vicinity of
the shrine.
