Government orders companies to “urgently and immediately” destroy HFC-23 [Government orders companies to “urgently and immediately” destroy HFC-23 ]NEW DELHI: In a move signalling India’s commitment to taking steps to reduce the presence of heat-trapping refrigerant gases, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in the atmosphere that are contributing to global warming, the government has ordered companies to “urgently and immediately” destroy HFC-23, which has a heat trapping capacity that is 14800 times that of carbon dioxide and has an atmospheric life of 222 years.

The move came after a Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) study claimed that Faridabad, Gurgaon and Delhi witnessed the worst pollution levels on Dusshera and had an air quality index (AQI) of 270, 238 and 223, respectively.

In 2012, after years of struggle by environmentalists, the ministry notified the entire stretch of the Ganga’s tributary Bhagirathi from its origin at Gaumukh to Uttarkashi as an eco-sensitive zone (ESZ).

Thought an agreement was signed between the corporation and GJ Eco Power Pvt. Ltd - the implementing agency of the project-seven months ago, the project has not received even a single clearance or permit document till date for commencing work. The agency has to get 21 approvals in order to start the construction of the plant.
