  • Maninder Kohli: i have joined regards
  • Deepak Arya: Yes I had been towards Sahasratal last June
  • Maninder Kohli: deepak this trek is from Uttarkashi right
  • Deepak Arya: yes
  • Maninder Kohli: Wanted to go to Kush Kalyan which is a lovely place for views of Banderpunch
  • Deepak Arya: Maninder we could trek only for 6 days and than rains started
  • Maninder Kohli: Anirudh do you also trek
  • Deepak Arya: always thought June would be good
  • Anirudh Nair: i do.
  • Maninder Kohli: I have done Din gad which is a bit north of Shastratal
  • Deepak Arya: got good views initially
  • Anirudh Nair: i wanted to ask whether u have climbed any of the peaks in the Western Ghats?
  • Deepak Arya: Anirudh if the question is for me all the tall ones in Karnataka
  • Maninder Kohli: I have done a trek to Rajmachi Fort but am more active in the Himalaya
  • Deepak Arya: We southies find it very difficult to travel and other logistics
  • Anirudh Nair: oh ok..i was curious to know how trekking in the Himalayas is different from the Western Ghats?
  • Deepak Arya: W Ghats it is green almost all the way
  • Maninder Kohli: I like doing exploratory treks where others have not gone sometimes 7-14 days etc very different
  • Deepak Arya: Very difficuly to find such routes
  • Deepak Arya: for such long time
  • Maninder Kohli: If you get a chance see my website www.juniperopc.com see sections of Signature Treks
  • Deepak Arya: sure
  • Maninder Kohli: There are lots of spots which are not done where locals go, I try to find these places and go there
  • Deepak Arya: I did check it out last month
  • Maninder Kohli: My favourite location is Baraadsar & Kanasar Lake in Western Garhwal
  • Deepak Arya: Even we have done lots long time back
  • Deepak Arya: Also check dreamroutes.org when free

  • Anirudh Nair: Maninder, I wanted to ask u whether its possible to balance one's corporate life and at the same time be an active mountaineer? If yes, how does one do that?
  • Anirudh Nair: I am a student studying in Pune.
  • Maninder Kohli: Mountaineering is difficult as you need atleast 3 weeks for a climb but trekking is more managable
  • Deepak Arya: Good you are close to quite a lot of good trekking routes
  • Maninder Kohli: yes there is an advantage if you are in Delhi
  • Anirudh Nair: Yes i had recently climbed a fort called Rajgadh..college study tour..was a brilliant experience.
  • Deepak Arya: I haven't climbed any Mountains - have been trekking in Himalayas since 1991
  • Maninder Kohli: We normally leave on a Friday night and are back on following Sunday
  • Maninder Kohli: Do join up for a trek in the summer going in first week of June
  • Deepak Arya: Where to?
  • Anirudh Nair: Oh ok..so then its manageable i think.
  • Maninder Kohli: Manju Kanta Pass in Western Garhwal
  • Deepak Arya: height
  • Maninder Kohli: 15000 feet this is not a frequented area
  • Deepak Arya: I had a bad skiing accident - shoulder and back
  • Deepak Arya: !5000 sgould be OK
  • Maninder Kohli: You could both also join the Himalayan Club -- sad to hear about the accident
  • Maninder Kohli: I would call it a moderate trek
  • Deepak Arya: I happen to be the Local Secretary of HC since 10 years
  • Maninder Kohli: Deepak you are Local Sec where ?
  • Deepak Arya: Bangalore
  • Deepak Arya: Harish Kaps is a good mentor
  • Maninder Kohli: Okay great to hear that yes I have seen your name around but not met you I know Mohanish Devjani
  • Deepak Arya: Yes Monish is known to me
  • Maninder Kohli: where was your skiing accident
  • Deepak Arya: Solang
  • Deepak Arya: I had gone for my Basic course
  • Maninder Kohli: Okay I go quite often to Gulmarg for skiing
  • Deepak Arya: I didn't know MS Kohli had such an accomplished son
  • Maninder Kohli: Just like the outdoors so keep getting out as often as possible
  • Deepak Arya: I keep coming to Mumbai meets
  • Deepak Arya: Surprising no one had mentioned about
  • Deepak Arya: You
  • Maninder Kohli: I am local sec in Delhi and organize lots of talks there as well
  • Maninder Kohli: I am on MC but attend only a few meetings
  • Deepak Arya: didn't make the connection
  • Maninder Kohli: I am on the Management Commitete of Himalayan Club and attend some meetings in Mumbai
  • Deepak Arya: Everything happens only in Mumbai
  • Maninder Kohli: Try to revive matters in Bangalore and have some talks and take on members
  • Deepak Arya: There are only 15 members and very fewn of them are active
  • Deepak Arya: I had organised BANFF and Khatmandu film festivals
  • Susan Sharma: I find trekking is a pleasure at any age
  • Deepak Arya: Harish and Col Abbey the next time had come
  • Maninder Kohli: Okay -- The only active centers are Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Kolkatta
  • Maninder Kohli: When did Harish and Abbey come
  • Deepak Arya: Susan I had taken a 72 year young man to Annapurna circuit
  • Maninder Kohli: Susan you should try to do a simple trek
  • Deepak Arya: During the film festivals
  • Maninder Kohli: I organized a talk in Delhi called Timeless Adventure all in the group trek at age 75+
  • Deepak Arya: WOW
  • Susan Sharma: Well, if you remember, we met at the Ecotrail contest organized by WWF where my blog on the Auli trek won a prize.
  • Maninder Kohli: They were nicknamed Young Seniors
  • Maninder Kohli: Yes I remember well

  • Susan Sharma: I did see them five of them taking off from a cliff
  • Maninder Kohli: What a sight must have been a treat

  • Susan Sharma: My dream is to go back there and make a short film
  • Maninder Kohli: I am waiting to get a SLR with movie capability
  • Susan Sharma: W.tragopan pic you mention is from Sarahan H.P where there is a breeding centre. i have not seen one in the wild
  • Maninder Kohli: It is difficult to spot
  • Deepak Arya: Get a Nikon
  • Maninder Kohli: I have Nikon 300 D but it does not have movie capability
  • Susan Sharma: Cannon HD is the latest craze among short film makers
