International Conference On Indian Ornithology 2013
The Sálim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) is hosting the second edition of the International Conference on Indian Ornithology 2013 (ICIO-2013) on its campus at Anaikatty, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India from November 19 to 23.
The conference will deliberate upon various aspects of Indian ornithology and would offer a platform to share the experiences of researchers from India and abroad. It will also encompass a wide range of people who include scientists, academics, protected
area managers, policy-makers and administrators from government departments, and NGOs involved in ornithological studies and conservation.

A window into HDSLR filmmaking for students & enthusiasts
Why HDSLR?
HDSLRs have changed the way we perceive the image making for cinema and documentaries alike. From Hollywood to Bollywood, many DOPs have added the HDSLR to their arsenal.
However, it is not easy to use a stills camera for filmmaking.
The deployment of these cameras needs a bit of re-tooling and some workarounds to manage the issues associated with DOF, moiré, compression, codecs, safe storage, intermediate files and the post-production workflows.
We hold workshops, giving a window to the world of HDSLR filmmaking, and some hands-on training on how to make it work.
The modules of this workshop are based on our past experience with the participants of our previous workshops.

The Quark Workshop:
Starting with the basics of digital photography (on day 1) we shall move on to more complex uses of Digital SLRs.
In the next three days of the workshop, we shall deal with the subject of HDSLR film-making in detail.
Right from rudimentary issues like customising the picture profiles to understanding how to avoid the usual traps of working with HDSLRs, we shall keep de-mystifying the process.
There shall also be a demonstration of the gear required to convert the HDSLR into a filmmaking device.
Sound recording and lighting up for the HDSLR set-up is part of the fare.
The last day shall be devoted to post-production workflows.
We are practitioners. The workshop is not meant to discuss theory and details of frame rates, line interpolation or film emulsion properties v/s the digital image. We are people who can demonstrate what can be done in a small budget using HDSLRs.
Our previous workshops had participants ranging from film-makers and DOPs from Mumbai and Regional Film-Industry, Cinematographers wanting to make the transition to the emerging digital technologies and students of film-making, besides photographers and
enthusiasts.
The participation fee for the 4-day workshop is Rs. 12,000.

Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation
The 2013 theme is mainstreaming biodiversity conservation at different levels to promote living in harmony with nature.
The theme is also significant in the context of recently held 11th Conference of Parties (CoP-11) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) at Hyderabad, India and UN Decade on Biodiversity 2011-2020 (65th session of United Nations
General Assembly resolution 65/161).
With the mission sustainability the 10th Conference of Parties (CoP-10) held in Japan agreed to the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 and the Aichi Targets as the basis for halting and eventually reversing the loss of biodiversity of the planet.
The overall purpose of all these endeavours is to inspire broad-based action in support of biodiversity over this decade (2011-2020) by all countries and stakeholders. Thus, 7th edition of CMS VATAVARAN will be promoting the coherent and effective implementation
of Strategic Plan and Aichi Targets.
CMS VATAVARAN will organise several interesting talks, expert and film sessions focussing on the environmental, political, governance, social and economic aspects of the conservation & sustainable use of biodiversity, fair and equitable sharing of the
benefits. More than 50 conservationists, policy makers' and the concerned communities will be engaged in five days of deliberations and discourses on the range of the sub-themes and cross-cutting issues:

Bird-watching for the beginners in Okhla Bird Sanctuary December 2013
The Okhla Bird Sanctuary is a small but unique sanctuary for its rich avi-faunal diversity and one among the fifteen bird sanctuaries in the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is located on the river Yamuna includes adjacent wetlands and small deltaic islands
sandwiched between Delhi Metro and Noida city in the heart of NCT-Delhi. Only 4 sq. km area was notified and declared as Okhla Bird Sanctuary in the year 1990. This mini bird sanctuary is a habitat of more than 320 bird species recorded till date.
There will be special efforts put towards making every participant to identify common birds at least this is done keeping in mind the Annual Waterfowl Census.
About 50% of the birds here are residents and the rainy season attracts a lot of interesting birds like Pelicans from neighbouring areas. Lets do a bird walk in Okhla on 2nd Wednesday.

Come with a small note book and pen, binoculars to make a list of birds seen. We will have spotting-scopes and a few binoculars with us in case if you don’t have one you are welcome to use these common shared resources.
