Leave Delhi by 4 am. That is the answer.
The Mathura-Vrindavan highway blocks completely by 9 am on Holi day. The last 10 kilometres alone take two hours once traffic builds from
Delhi, Noida, and Agra all hitting the same stretch simultaneously.
Leaving at 4 am gets you to Vrindavan by 6:30 am. The early morning Banke Bihari celebrations are quieter, more intimate, and far more memorable
than what happens later. You are inside before 40,000 people arrive.
For the return, leave by 12:30 pm. Roads are clear before that window. After 1 pm, traffic locks up for five straight hours and there is
no shortcut around it.
Groups travelling from Delhi book a
tempo traveller on rent in Delhi so everyone leaves together at 4 am without the chaos of coordinating separate cars on the busiest travel day of the year.
