Forum > Travel > Do Tourist Vehicles Need Permits to Travel Between States in North India?

Posted by Ajay Sengar on March 17, 2026

Navigating the permits for a North India tour can be a bit tricky, but having the right documents makes the journey much smoother. For any long-distance trip, your vehicle must carry the original Registration Certificate, valid commercial insurance, and an updated Fitness Certificate. Since 2026, the Ministry of Road Transport has tightened rules, so ensure your vehicle is also compliant with the latest BS-VI norms and has a functional GPS as per the new safety mandates.

If you're planning to enter Himachal Pradesh or Uttarakhand, be ready for the specific state entry taxes. As of April 2026, Himachal has revised its toll policy, and a standard 12-seater now pays approximately ₹550 per day. Uttarakhand also charges a Green Cess of roughly ₹520 to protect the Himalayan environment. To avoid any legal hurdles at the borders, always verify that your operator has a current Tempo Traveller Permit ready. Keeping an eye on the updated Tempo Traveller Permit Tax for each state will ensure your group travels without any unexpected stops or fines. Enjoy the mountains!
