Forum > Travel > When was Pench declared a tiger reserve under Project Tiger?

Posted by pench booking on March 26, 2026

Pench National Park was officially declared a tiger reserve in 1992 under the ambitious Project Tiger initiative launched by the Government of India. This milestone is an important part of the history of Pench, marking a turning point in its conservation journey. Before receiving this status, Pench was already known for its rich biodiversity and dense teak forests, but inclusion under Project Tiger brought stricter protection, better management, and scientific monitoring of wildlife. The reserve was divided into core and buffer zones to reduce human interference while promoting sustainable eco-tourism. Since 1992, Pench has seen significant improvements in tiger population and habitat quality. Today, it stands as a key chapter in the history of Pench, playing a crucial role in conserving the Bengal tiger and maintaining ecological balance in Central India.
