The Meaning Behind the Name
The name Panchachuli comes from two words:
Panch, meaning five, and
Chuli, commonly understood as peaks or mountain summits. The name refers to the group of five prominent peaks that dominate the landscape of the Darma Valley.
Local traditions connect these mountains with the
Pandavas of the Mahabharata. According to popular folklore, the five peaks are associated with the five Pandava brothers and are sometimes described as their mythical cooking hearths during their journey toward the Himalayas. This legend has become an
important part of the cultural identity surrounding Panchachuli, although it belongs to local mythology rather than documented historical evidence.
A Landscape Shaped by the Himalayas
The Panchachuli massif lies in the eastern
Kumaon Himalayas, close to the India–Tibet frontier. The mountains rise above the Darma Valley, surrounded by glaciers, alpine landscapes, and rugged Himalayan terrain.

A History of Exploration and Mountaineering
Panchachuli has attracted mountaineers and explorers because of its remote location and challenging Himalayan terrain. The first successful ascent of
Panchachuli II was achieved in
1973 by an Indo-British expedition led by C. Douglas Scott and Balwant Sandhu.
Since then, the Panchachuli range has continued to attract trekkers, photographers, and mountaineering enthusiasts interested in experiencing one of Kumaon’s less-developed Himalayan landscapes.
