Forum > Travel > Munsyari: Uttarakhand’s Quiet Kingdom Beneath Five Snow Peaks

Posted by BizareXpedition on November 03, 2026

Far in the eastern corner of Uttarakhand, in the Pithoragarh district, Munsyari sits at about 2,200 metres, facing a wall of Himalayan giants. Few tourists make the long drive, and that is exactly why it feels so unspoiled. The journey is part of the experience, with winding roads, deep river valleys and villages that look unchanged for decades.

The View That Defines It

Munsyari’s signature sight is the Panchachuli range, five snow peaks standing side by side like a row of stoves. Local legend says the Pandavas cooked their last meal here before leaving for heaven. At sunrise, the peaks turn gold and then pink, and even a simple cup of tea feels special. Clear mornings are best, when the whole range stands sharp against a pale blue sky and the town is still asleep.

Walks and Viewpoints

Khaliya Top is a steep trek through rhododendron and oak forest to an alpine meadow with sweeping views. In spring, the rhododendrons bloom red along the trail, and the meadow at the top is a perfect place to rest and eat a packed lunch. Closer to town, Kalamuni Temple sits on a ridge with a wide panorama, and Nanda Devi Temple is a peaceful stop to feel the local faith. Birthi Falls, on the road in, drops from a great height and makes a fine break in the journey.

Culture of the Johar Valley

Munsyari was once a trading post on the old route to Tibet, and the Johar Bhotia people still carry that heritage. The Tribal Heritage Museum displays old coins, woollen clothing, utensils and photographs from that era, and the stories behind them make the museum feel alive. Pick up handwoven shawls and woollen goods in the local market, and chat with the weavers if you can.

For Trekkers

Munsyari is the gateway to the Milam Glacier trek, along the Gori Ganga river. It is a demanding route that needs permits and good planning, but rewards you with raw, remote mountain scenery.

The Feeling It Leaves

Munsyari doesn’t offer much to do, and that’s the point. You come for the mountains, the silence and the cold clear air, and you leave a little slower than you arrived.
