G.B Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment and Development
G.B.Pant Institute is located in Kosi, 12kms from Almora, close to the birthplace of Gobind Ballabh Pant. The institute was established in1988 as an autonomous institute of the Ministry of Forests and Environment.

Among the various levels at which the institute operates, one is to conserve biological diversity. " The program aims at harnessing potential bio-resources equitably and also in halting the increasing pressure on biological assets. Inventorying, establishing gene banks and assessing threats to bio-diversity are focal areas of activity. " says Dr.L.M.S Palni, director of the institute.

In an effort to take the program from the scientists to the people, programs are organized for school children and teachers. These children have to walk long distances through dense forest rich in bio-diversity. Once in the program they keep their eyes and ears open as they walk to and fro. The otherwise bored children and teachers with no hope of seeing anything beyond the view from the hills, see some excitement in the new project. Soon after the program is completed, the institute takes them to new areas where they don the role of trainers. The travel out of their cloistered existence, the hospitality, the exposure is motivation enough for the institute's programs becoming popular.

In addition to training children, G.B.Pant Institute has a short duration program for army personnel, NGOs, farmers, rural women and Ex Service men on nursery development, natural resource conservation and management.
