NGO launches device for easy disposal of solid waste (Issue of the week, January Week #4 (2015))

Guwahati: The city has always been a poor performer in waste management and garbage disposal and the situation is getting worse by the day. Hoping to make a difference, a city-based NGO has come up with an innovative idea to decompose household garbage.

Assam Pollution Control Board (APCB) has promised to help the NGO spread the idea and technology in the city. The NGO, Environ, has developed 'Waste Assimilator' for solid and liquid waste management in households

47 migratory birds found dead at Gurgaon park (January Week #4 (2015))

At least 47 migratory birds, 36 of them coots and 9 common moorhen, were found dead at Sultanpur National Park near Gurgaon on Saturday morning. The forest and wild life department has shut down the park for one week and put up a notice at the main gate
to inform tourists.

Migratory, local birds take a hit during kite flying (January Week #4 (2015))

JAIPUR: This year again heavy casualties of birds were reported on Makar Sankranti. Despite ban and repeated appeals from the animal rights activists, denizens continued to fly kites with razor sharp manjha leading to death of scores of winged creatures
including few endangered species, migratory birds and vultures.

Undoubtedly, the maximum casualties were in pigeons, sparrows and parrots. This year, the killer manjha killed migratory birds like Rosy Starling from Balochistan, Europe's Wood Sand Piper from the urban areas while two casualties were reported from Nahargarh
biological park Short-eared owl and Steppe eagle.

Decision on complete polythene ban in six weeks: MP govt tells NGT (January Week #4 (2015))

The Madhya Pradesh government on Tuesday informed the National Green Tribunal (NGT) that the decision regarding prohibition on the manufacture, storage, sale, distribution and use of polythene bags in the state would be taken in six weeks. The NGT Bench
was apprised about this during a hearing on the case filed by environmentalist Subash Pandey. The next hearing is on March 3.
