E-campaign against animal cruelty (May Week #1 (2015))

Chennai: An online signature campaign is gaining momentum in the city for the last three weeks to implement the already existing animal laws that prevent atrocities against animals. More than 3,000 citizens have already
signed the petition, an initiative started by PFCI (People for Cattle in India), an NGO formed by animal lovers to promote animal welfare. The online campaign, that is addressed to the Central, State government, the Supreme Court and the Madras High Court,
also marks the end of the ‘prevent animal cruelty’ month.

Antarctica harbours hidden interconnected lakes underneath its dry valleys that could sustain life and shed light on ancient climate change, scientists have found using an airborne imaging system.

Researchers detected extensive salty groundwater networks in Antarctica using a novel airborne electromagnetic mapping sensor system called SkyTEM. 

China: Record $650,000 pollution fine for McDonald’s supplier for releasing dirty water (May Week #1 (2015))

A french fry supplier to the McDonald’s restaurant chain in China has been issued Beijing’s biggest-ever pollution fine for releasing dirty wastewater.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported late Wednesday that Beijing environmental officials levied a record fine of 3.8 million yuan, or more than $650,000, against Beijing Simplot Food Processing Co. Ltd.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Plant a sapling with a reason and make it a special day of your loved ones, says a city based self-help group Go Green Save Earth (GGSE).

The group launched an online drive "Gift a Sapling" on World Earth Day on Wednesday. One can join the drive by registering by remitting Rs 100 on the website www.ggse.in and GGSE will plant a sapling, mostly a medicinal plant, inside Technopark campus
or near beach side at Kazhakkoottam. The amount charged will be utilized for conservation and maintenance of the plant.
