NEW DELHI: Five Ganga river basin states - Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal - will soon launch a massive plantation drive as part of rejuvenating the country's national rive. The scheme, aims to develop huge green patch along
the river to absorb water and stop soil erosion, will be implemented over a period of five year in Phase-I (2016-21).

CHENNAI: The Southern bench of the National Green Tribunal has fined Dr MGR University Rs 40 lakh for discharging sewage into the River Cooum. The tribunal also directed the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to initiate criminal proceedings against
the university. The directive came after the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) sub mitted a report saying Dr MGR University Research & Educational Institute in Maduravoyal, Thai Moogambigai Dental College & Hospital in Mogappair, Thai Moogambigai
Polytechnic College in Nerkundram and two of the university's hostels in Maduravoyal were letting untreated sewage into the Cooum.

New Delhi: As the second phase of the odd-even scheme is approaching, the Delhi government is fleshing out a robust air pollution monitoring plan.

Delhi Pollution Control Committee recently floated a global tender for hand-held air pollution monitoring devices, which scientists hope would come before the plan kicks in. The major change in the scheme this time would be in the way monitoring is done
and the locations selected, officials said.

Mumbai: To carry out a headcount of leopards inhabiting Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary, camera traps will be placed across the forested part. This sanctuary stretches from the fringes of Sanjay Gandhi National Park and extends beyond Virar.

The government has introduced a comprehensive plan to develop the Harike wetland at Makhu, a rural town under Zira subdivision of Ferozepur, under the Eco Development Project at a cost of Rs 7.5 crore. A nature interpretation centre is under construction,
