Snake boat race in Kerala

Forum Post
The snake boat race in Kerala is being run like the IPL matches of cricket.  Being a homegrown traditional sport of kerala, the support base in Kerala as well as the Pravasi Keralites is very good.  the sport now has 9 leagues, and a massive fan following on TV as well.

The Championship of last year (2019)was won by a 01 second margin,  according to Bala Kiran, CEO Trivandrum Smart city.  Over the last 3 years, winning teams took home prize money of approximately Rs 1.60 crores.
Unlike many other popular sports, the snake boat race can happen only if the rivers of Kerala continue to flow.

The rich, natural growth of native plants and trees on the banks of Manimala river. Manimala is a 92 km long river in South and Central Kerala. It originates in Idukki district, also in the Western Ghats.  This river also empties into the Vembanad lake.  In fact ten major rivers of Kerala empty into the Vembanad lake.  A mud regulator divides the lake into two parts - one with perennial brackish water and the other with fresh water from rivers draining into the lake.

The river ecosystems of Kerala are worth protecting for future generations.

Pooyamkutty Forests in Kerala

Posted by Jithin Prem on October 16, 2016

Forum Post

PooyamKutty is a less known destination blessed with scenic hill ranges, small waterfalls and abundant wildlife. I visited Pooyamkutty with my friends back in 2015 when we heard a few stories about the tribes who lives in harmony with the elephants. The forest is one of the main migration route for elephants here. Encounter with elephants are part of their lives now, but both of them live in harmony. Bamboo trees constitute a massive part of the vegetation which is a favorite diet of the elephants.

The Pooyamkutty forest is separated by Pooyamkutty River and you need to cross the river to get into the forest. We had to trek nearly 10 kms through the forest to get to the tribal village. Since the village is in the middle of the jungle, encounters with wildlife are part of their daily life. Major wildlife here includes leopards, macaques, spotted deer, wild boars, civets etc.

It was a one day trip, we reached there early by 9:00 AM in the morning and came out of the forest by 5:00 PM. It would be better to go early and come back before it is dawn, because it’s dangerous to walk through the jungle when it is dark.
