Susan Welcome to IWC chat on "Migratory Birds of
India"
Susan Nice to see you,
Sashi
Sashikumar
Thank you, Susan
Susan I really appreciate the fact that you
travelled 26km to access the internet so that you can participate.
Susan
While we wait for others to join in, may be you can start your introduction.
Susan How long have you been bird watching?
Sashikumar The
migratory birds have started to arrive here this season also as usual. The leaf warblers are here; so are some of the waders like Common sandpiper, Common Redshank etc. I've been witnessing this since I started bird watching 25 years ago.
Susan These birds you are referring to are "local
migrators" are they?
Sashikumar As
far as Kerala is concerned, most of the migrants are long distance
travellers. Some of the leaf warblers do breed in the
Himalayas. The Common Sandpiper also breeds within Indian limits in the
Himalayas.
Susan
What about the sandpipers and red shank- Do they also breed in
India?
Susan
I had been to
Bharatpur last week. The water levels there are very low. So painted storks had not yet come. Usually they start nesting early
oct.
Sashikumar The
Painted Stork is a local migrant to Kerala, it seems. They breed in
Tamilnadu and Karnataka. Breeding colonies like
Ranganathittu and Koondakulam are not far from
Kerala, interestingly. State boundaries are not for birds, of course.
Susan Where in
Kerala can one see the painted stork and during which month?
Sashikumar
There are only sporadic sightings of this stork in
Kerala. Walayar reservoir near
Palakkad is one place where there had been several sightings over the years.
