- Susan Sharma: Welcome to IWC chat on "reduce, Recycle and Reuse"
- Susan Sharma: There are two moderators-Dhaval S Patel and Prakshal
- Dhaval Patel: good evening
- Susan Sharma: Good evening
- Susan Sharma: Let us hear what made you start an organization with this theme.
- Dhaval Patel: oh actually our theme is wider
- Dhaval Patel: environmental protection through education and awareness
- Dhaval Patel: and R's are one of the aspects of it
- Susan Sharma: What are your activities?
- Dhaval Patel: of course education thru several camps, nature trails, etc.
- Dhaval Patel: rescue and rehabilitation of urban wildlife
- Dhaval Patel: activism for conservation
- Dhaval Patel: like filing PIL in gujarat high court for saving around 400 trees
- Susan Sharma: How long have your NGO been active? Any successes thro PILs?
- Dhaval Patel: fighting against polluting industry
- Dhaval Patel: we are active since 1988,
- Dhaval Patel: yes we are able to save trees
- Susan Sharma: Let us now talk in detail about today's topic.
- Dhaval Patel: one of our motivating quote is by Shri M K Gandhi 'Live simply so that others may simply live"
- Susan Sharma: So true
- Dhaval Patel: yes our topic is to transfer Useless to Useful
- Susan Sharma: Pl.go ahead
- Dhaval Patel: traditionally our Oriental culture teaches us Not to Waste, Not to Over Consume.
- Dhaval Patel: to share was essence of life
- Susan Sharma: I think all ancient cultures taught that.
- Dhaval Patel: if we recall just before few years back we seldom wasted anything, we kept all small and sundry items for future use
- Susan Sharma: How does one practice that in today's world?
- Dhaval Patel: by setting priorities straight
- Dhaval Patel: we often mistake our wants as our needs,
- Susan Sharma: A change in mindset is needed. But it also helps if there is value add in reuse and recycle...
- Dhaval Patel: we are trying to bring out all that 'Wants' (once upon time) out of the closets
- Dhaval Patel: so that it meets real Needs of deprived
- Susan Sharma: How are you achieving that?
- Dhaval Patel: we are arranging a drive for pursuing affluent class to donate all those Non Use / not of use any more things like
- Dhaval Patel: Books, cloths, footwears, bags, toys etc
- Dhaval Patel: these would be sorted and cleaned and items which are having life
- Dhaval Patel: would be arranged and displayed as if in a Mall
- Dhaval Patel: pre identified needy children would be provided with Fake Currency
- Dhaval Patel: on prescribed day they will visit Mock Mall
- Susan Sharma: That sounds interesting
- Dhaval Patel: and do Shopping over there
- Susan Sharma: So tomorrow you are having a mock mall sale?
- Dhaval Patel: as they would be having limited resources they will be choosing with care
- Dhaval Patel: no from tomorrow we are having collection drive
- Dhaval Patel: till 27th evening
- Dhaval Patel: from 28th to 30th we will be sorting , cleaning, ironing if needed
- Dhaval Patel: then on 1st July we will have Mock
- Dhaval Patel: Mall sale
- Susan Sharma: There is a lot of work involved in these activities. How do you get help?
- Dhaval Patel: we get support from Volunteers
- Dhaval Patel: all age, school, college, elders
- Dhaval Patel: also we have collaborated with State Bank of India
- Susan Sharma: Do you have these collection drives often?
- Dhaval Patel: once in six months
- Susan Sharma: What is SBI's role in this?
- Dhaval Patel: financial support, collection points,
- Dhaval Patel: in this program Deprived dont feel humiliation often involved in Donation
- Susan Sharma: surprising that no one else has turned up for the chat-the Rs have become a cliche may be.
- Dhaval Patel: they get what they want and not what we give
- Dhaval Patel: yes indeed
- Dhaval Patel: painful
- Susan Sharma: I think " not feeling humiliation"of donation is a great innovation you are doing.
- Dhaval Patel: Thanks to our partners in this project WAY
- Dhaval Patel: World Around You
- Susan Sharma: You operate in Ahmedabad only or in other cities too?
- Dhaval Patel: we carried out in Ahemdabad in March right now it will be in Anand - Vallabh Vidyanagar (AMUL butter fame)
- Dhaval Patel: and soon we will replicate it other cities in Gujarat
- Susan Sharma: Look forward to seeing photographs of the mock mall on face book.
- Dhaval Patel: we would be glad to partner with likeminded NGOs in cities out of Gujarat
- Dhaval Patel: sure will be posting pictures on Facebook group of Vidyanagar Nature Club.
- Susan Sharma: You awareness programs are on environmental issues as well? In schools mainly?
- Dhaval Patel: yes also in colleges
- Dhaval Patel: and for rural communities
- Susan Sharma: That is one area where IWC can think of partnering in future.
- Dhaval Patel: we would be Glad
- Susan Sharma: Please utilize our blog section to promote the work you are doing, especially in the area of environment and nature
- Dhaval Patel: sure
- Susan Sharma: As soon as we close the chat room, our conversatin will be archived
- Dhaval Patel: ok
- Susan Sharma: will show up in searches and of course you can post the link to the chat transcript anywhere you like
- Dhaval Patel: good
- Susan Sharma: That is a small contribution IWC is making to make the wonderful work you are doing to as many people as possible
- Susan Sharma: Since non else is around, shall we close?
- Dhaval Patel: Thank you for your great initiative
- Dhaval Patel: yes it would be wise to close now
- Susan Sharma: Thank you for coming by and telling us about the practical ways of the three Rs
- Susan Sharma: Good night
